laser vision correction beyond LASIK
ZEISS SMILE is a less invasive way to treat short-sightedness and astigmatism. Traditional laser vision correction, involves creating a flap on the cornea, before using a second laser - the Excimer Laser, to reshape the cornea. With ZEISS SMILE, no corneal flap is required.

For more than 10 years, individualized Femto LASIK has been the scientifically accepted method for the correction of ametropia.
The ZEISS SMILE (previously known as RELEX SMILE) keyhole technology goes one step further: laser eye surgery has become even safe, gentle and fast. A 3D disk (lenticule) is prepared inside the cornea and removed through a tiny <4mm “keyhole” opening prepared by laser.
The volume and shape of the lenticule corresponds to the amount of tissue required to correct your vision disorder. Also the stability of the cornea is maintained and the production of the tear film is hardly disturbed. This makes ZEISS SMILE suitable for patients with dry eyes or contact lens intolerance. The icing on the cake: only 28 seconds per eye are required for the entire procedure.
FLAP CREATION
One of the main differences between the two procedures is the way in which the corneal flap is created. Traditional LASIK uses a microkeratome or femtosecond laser to create a flap in the cornea, whereas ZEISS SMILE uses a femtosecond laser to create a small incision in the cornea and remove a small lenticule of tissue.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE vs FLAP-BASED
ZEISS SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure that requires only a small incision, whereas traditional LASIK requires the creation of a corneal flap, which can be larger and can take longer to heal.
RECOVERY TIME
Because ZEISS SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure that preserves more of the cornea's natural structure, it often results in a quicker recovery time than traditional LASIK.
TREATMENT RANGE
Both procedures can treat nearsightedness and astigmatism.
RISK OF COMPLICATIONS
Both procedures are generally considered safe and effective, but there may be a slightly lower risk of complications with ZEISS SMILE due to its minimally invasive nature.
